The oldest chapel of Amsterdam
is ready to welcome you
The legacy of Olof's dates back to 1440
Constructed in 1440 on the Zeedijk, the historic dyke linking the IJ to Amsterdam’s earliest settlement, the Olof’s Chapel served as a sacred place where sailors prayed before embarking on voyages across the globe.
The chapel suffered extensive damage during a devastating fire in the 1960s. Decades later, restoration efforts led by the NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace hotel revived its grandeur, seamlessly blending historical significance with premium hospitality.
Today, Olof’s Chapel remains a lasting symbol of Amsterdam’s maritime heritage and architectural history.

What's happening?
Saint Olof
A hidden gem in Amsterdam
The oldest chapel in the Dutch capital holds a rich history and a tradition of bringing people together. Dedicated to Saint Olof, the patron saint of seafarers travelling to the icy north, the chapel was constructed in 1440. It has witnessed notable figures, including Michiel de Ruyter, embark on voyages across the seven seas. During the renovation in the 1990s, numerous artefacts from the chapel’s storied past were excavated.
Today, these treasures are on display, welcoming guests entering either privately from Zeedijk street or through the NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace hotel. Guests are greeted by one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Whether hosting a convention, a meeting or a wedding, the chapel continues to amaze and inspire with its timeless charm.
